Current Research

Exploring the relationship between prison violence and greenness
This project is being designed to explore how green space around prisons impacts the incidence of violent behavior. We are looking at self-harm, prisoner on prisoner violence, prisoner on guard violence, and guard on prisoner violence.

Health and the Environment
This study is exploring factors of health and environmental factors at a national level. We are looking at the factors of poor mental health at a state, regional and national levels. Health factors include health insurance, coronary heart disease, kidney disease, diabetes, sleep less than seven hours, physical inactivity, Blood pressure, and medication adherence. Environmental factors include vegetation indices from the United States Geological Society.

Urban Park Usage and Wellbeing
The purpose of this research study is to gain a better understanding of people who use urban parks and how urban parks can support health. The study is collecting survey data and saliva samples. We are explorgein the dose effect of spending time in parks on wellbeing and salivary hormones including cortisol and Dehydroepiandrosterone (S). We are planning to invite 300 park visitors to participate in this study. We were approved by University of Alabama Birmingham IRB, have recruited and trained data collectors and data collection has started.

Resilience of Environmental Migrants
A qualitative descriptive study. We are collecting in-depth interviews and through geographic information systems (GIS) will explore the experience of environmental migrants’ resilient potential. We are seeking research assistants (RA) to collaborate on multiple phases of the study; participant recruitment, interviews, GIS data collection and analysis, qualitative analysis and manuscript writing. Research assistants will have the opportunity to co-author publications and presentations. Secondary aims proposed by the research assistant are welcome.
